One Day Trip in Penang

Things to do in Penang

Today Penang Island is a major tourist destination, one of Malaysia's finest in fact. People from all over the world come here to experience its unique blend of different cultures, taste food that makes Penang famous throughout Malaysia, laze on its beaches and explore its old city enclaves and heritage sites. Penang played an important role for merchants and pirates in the distant past. Partly because of the earlier mentioned diversity of inhabitants Penang is famous for its beautiful cultural diversity. With the majority of the inhabitants being Chinese the island has a very Chinese 'feel' to it. This gives the island something 'typical Asian', which cannot be seen as clearly anywhere else in Malaysia. Penang is a great destination, absolutely worthy of a visit. Not so much because of the beautiful beaches, but because of the great melting pot of cultures. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations within Malaysia. For years the island is referred to as 'The Pearl of the Orient'.

My friends and I was planned one day trip to tour around Penang. This blog will show you how beautiful Penang is it.

1. Watch the amazing sunrise from the top of Penang Hill.

Penang Hill was discovered when soon after British settlement; Francis Light commissioned the area to be cleared to grow strawberries. Though it was never fully developed (it was difficult to carve out the forest area), it became a favourite expatriate refuge before the advent of air conditioning. Its oldest bungalow, Bel Retiro, is the holiday residence of the Governor of Penang.

Penang Hill was provided the train services daily including public holidays. The operation time is from 6.30am until 11.00pm. You can enjoy the view at the both side when the train is travelling to the top.

We reached the top of Penang Hill by 7am and able to watch the view of sunrise accompany by the view of whole Penang.

After we catch up the sunrise, We continue walk around the Penang Hill and keep taking photo as memories!

2. Air Itam Market

"A good breakfast fuel you up and gets you ready for the day“

After we went down from the top of Penang Hill, we went to Air Itam Wet Market, the most popular market in the Penang. As with most markets, Air Itam Market has plenty of hawker stall selling foods. The most famous is the Sister Curry Mee and Air Itam Laksa.

3. Air Itam Laksa

After we had our breakfast at Air Itam Market, we went to Kek Lok Si have a look, before we went up  Kek Lok Si, we pass through the famous Air Itam Laksa. The distance to Kek Lok Si in only 5 minutes.

5. Kek Lok Si

Standing on a hilltop at Air Itam, near Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. The complex is divided into three zones while the temple grounds comprise the hill entrance, souvenir, food and drinks stalls and the turtle liberation pond. The mid section of the temple houses temples, gardens, the pagoda and the four heavenly kings pavilion; meanwhile the hilltop plays host to an enormous statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin as well as more gardens and temples.

6. Heritage Area

Armenian Street

Penang heritage sites are one of the most numerous in Malaysia. With the inscription of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2008, garnering much prestige for Penang, more attention will certainly be paid to its many heritage sites.

The heritage sites of Penang encompass buildings constructed by the British during the colonial era, clan temples of the various Chinese clan associations, religious structures including temples, mosques, churches and shrines, and other structures, including pre-war shophouses within the inner city.
